Saint Pierre Toussaint
1923 - 1985
Toussaint was born and lived in a small farming village near the affluent town of Kenscoff. Nestled high in mountains above Port-au-Prince, his days as a farmer are transcended by his free time as a fledgling young painter under the watchful eye of Master painter Michele Manuel. Uninhibited by outside forces, he crafted a style and imagery unique to his experienced influences and engagement with nature and his spiritual connection and practice of voodoo ceremonies. Toussaint’s work is comprised of vivid brushstrokes, contrasting tones of background, stylized symbolism of natural icons, and seemingly flat and unconnected images to form vibrant and energetic manifestations of abstract art.
